When I discovered that my twin daughters had a range of specific learning difficulties, it was an
enormous relief to learn that there were schools such as Edington and Shapwick
who would be able to attend to their specific needs and provide an environment
in which their confidence and self-esteem could be nurtured.
"Edington & Shapwick was the
only Dyslexic school out of 5 we visited that offered a totally holistic
approach in that it focused on self esteem, academic, creative, social skills,
speech & language and sport. After only 6 months, our son won the Maths Prize at Prize
Giving for improving in maths by 56 months. We were so proud and happy –
but more importantly; HE was proud and happy. He is a different boy now –
our only regret is that we did not move him here earlier.
Choosing
Edington & Shapwick was easy. After the taster day he said he felt
like he “fitted in” and that every lesson was like having his ‘one to one’
D. Maslen,
“My daughter’s life has changed dramatically
since being at Edington. As a consequence, so has mine and family life. I used
to worry about her all the time – now I feel I have done my best for her – she
is safe, nurtured and her growing confidence is beyond my dreams for her. I
feel Edington has given me the chance to really get to know my daughter. She
now feels confident enough, and has the language skills to reveal herself to
me.”
M. Jonas,
“We looked hard and long for help for our
daughter and despite the efforts of teachers in the State sector she was
overshadowed in class and intimidated by other pupils.
The prospect of our daughter moving too a
large senior school was to much; she would have been lost and not received the
education she needed. Edington and Shapwick recognised her as an individual not
as someone with dyslexia, valuing her strengths and genuinely helping her to
learn those things that she had previously struggled to learn.
With her being a boarder at so young an age
the boarding house and especially the house parents had to shine. The house
parents shone well above others we had met. The boarding house was homely and
well kept. We all liked the atmosphere that was created due to the house
parent’s hard work. Both house parents were very approachable and made our daughter
feel very welcome. Which has made the difficult separation easier."
J. & A. Battye,
“Since attending Edington and Shapwick School our son has shown significant improvement in his capabilities. We have
seen his confidence and self-esteem soar. For the first time in his school life
he is truly happy, making tremendous progress and fulfilling his potential. He
now realizes that success is possible. Thank you.”
C.
Walliss,
“Our son joined the school in year 4 after
frustrating times in a mainstream primary school. He has come on in leaps and
bounds now realising his full potential. His confidence and self esteem has
grown and is now a happy boy who looks forward to school.”
N. Jones,
“Since moving to Edington I have seen a sensitive child grow enormously in self-confidence and self-esteem.
The school is starting to provide Joe with the strategies needed to meet the challenges that he has to overcome with his dyslexia and associated coordination difficulties. This is all done in an environment in which pupils feel safe, secure and listened to. I feel sure that this will enable Joe to go into life a much happier and confident individual.”
“My son has been at Edington for 23
academic weeks and already I can see a huge improvement in his reading ability,
confidence to try and his attitude towards reading and writing. We both feel
very positive about his future now.
G. Turner,
Sadly, dyslexia means that ‘failure’
can pursue boys and girls throughout their school days. One could argue that that
this proportion is actually growing with the ever-growing emphasis on literacy.
