Shapwick Enjoy 7 a side Rugby Success
National 7 a side Rugby Championships
The Under 16 team took part in the annual National Independent School’s Association (ISA) 7 a side rugby championships at Old Leamington RFC in Warwickshire.  There were 20 schools in attendance and it was clear from the start that the Shapwick team would do well in the group stage.  This proved to be correct and they won all four matches quite comfortably, despite not always taking the correct options on the field.  However, they quickly learned from their mistakes, and progressed into the Quarter Finals.

In the first five minutes against ‘Bedstone’ they were 0-19 down making every mistake possible in both defence and attack, however at half time the score was 7-19.  In the second half, with ringing in their ears from Mr Whittock’s team talk, Shapwick played considerably better and won in the last minute 21-19, with Charley Smith converting the winning try.  Elated with the result Shapwick progressed into the Semi-final but were soundly beaten by a better side on the day.  To reach the last 4 of a national competition is a fantastic result for such a small school.  The team spirit was great throughout, every member of the 13 man squad contributing and taking to the field, and was most notably led by our England trialist, Robert Langley.

Trinity School 7 a side Rugby Tournament
After the success at the National ISA Championships, Shapwick took part in this invitation 7 a side tournament in Teignmouth, Devon.  Against larger schools Shapwick won all their games and came home with the winners trophy.  In the four games they scored 155 points and only conceded 10!  The results speak for themselves, but once again the outstanding player and top scorer of any participating team was Robert Langley who scored 10 tries on the day.

In the two tournaments Shapwick U16 7 a side team played 10 matches against the other Independent Schools and won 9 of them.  The team have every right to be proud of their results.
