The bronze award is made up of 4 sections: expedition, service, physical activity and skill (a non physical activity). Our extensive after school activities programme offers opportunities to cover the physical activity and the skill section.
For many years now Edington and Shapwick Specialist Dysliexia School have had links with Bridgwater Police Station and our local beat manager PC Andy Pilgrim organises an excellent programme for the service section of the award. This usually runs for about two terms and includes a visit to the Police Station, Magistrates’ Court and a demonstration showing the work of Police dogs and their handler.
A practice expedition for the expedition section takes place on Exmoor during the last week of the Summer Term in year 9 and the qualifying expedition is carried out during the summer term of year 10 and involves one night camping and two days walking on the Mendip Hills.
The award encourages good use of leisure time and is not intended to be carried out in normal school hours. It is voluntary, open to all and is not competitive. Individuals are expected to have their own goals and work towards them. The final age for completion is 25 years.
Pupils who complete the bronze award at the end of year 10 have the opportunity to begin the silver award with us and continue with it post year 11 and hopefully carry on and complete the Gold Award.
