It was a lovely sunny day and the Edington pitches looked better than Wembley. The conditions were absolutely perfect!
Teams from Chilton Cantelo and St Michaels joined Edington and Shapwick School to compete for the A and B League Shields.
Each school played against each other twice in the league competitions, playing 4 games in total.
After a highly contested 12 games, Chilton Cantelo and St Michaels managed to gain the most points in both of the A and B league competitions. This meant these two schools would play each other in both finals.
Both shields were eventually won by the Chilton Cantelo Girls, with both teams narrowly beating their St Michaels opponents in the finals.
Chilton’s ‘B’ Team won 1-0, and their ‘A’ Team claimed their shield after a penalty shoot out!
After a long but enjoyable afternoon, Mr Coombes had this to say about the Edington and Shapwick Girls ‘A’ Team:
- The Captain, Girl S, led the team from the first minute - immediately making an impact with a crunching tackle!
- Girl K, in goal, stopped shot after shot and also helped to start attacks with her newly practiced kicks.
- Girl D was tireless! Breaking down play, tackling and playing forward at every opportunity!
- Girl C never stopped running, covering every blade of grass on the pitch – her energy was infectious!
- Girl H was inspirational as always, shooting on sight and hitting the post twice (if both shots had gone in… we could have been in the final)!
- Girl B’s speed and strength stopped the opposition on many occasion. Her fantastic left foot was invaluable in dead ball situations and she is awarded ‘A’ Team player of the Tournament.
Mr Coombes went on to say: “The girls were outstanding, I couldn’t have asked for anymore! They were buzzing and enjoying every minute. They kept asking me if they could play again! Even after the competition had finished, they demanded to know what school we were playing next and when! It was a great day! Well done everyone!”
Mr Harrison, who gave up his weekly round of golf, kindly looked after the Edington & Shapwick Girls ‘B’ Team on the day.
He said:
- Girl C captained the side. She was patient and organised the team extremely well
- Girl K improved with every match and pulled off some wonderful saves in goal
- Girl F and Girl E never lost heart and played their socks off
- Girl J battled hard and won a lot of challenges
- The ‘B’ Team star of the show was Girl E, who was outstanding in all areas of the field
Mr Harrison’s final words were: “I was chuffed to bits with the girls’ efforts! They’re enthusiasm was superb from the first kick of the first game to the last kick of the last game. They should be very proud of themselves! Well done!”
